Location. The Institute is a major branch of the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) of the Ministry of Information, Transport and Communication. It is located approximately eight kilometers, west of Nairobi City Centre along Ngong Road at Dagoretti Corner, within the premises of KMD Headquarters. History The IMTR was established in 1963. In 1965 it was upgraded to the status of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Meteorological Training Centre (RMTC) for the Anglophone Africa. There are only 22 such training centres in the world. In 1991 the Postgraduate Programme in Hydrology was established with the support of well known academic institutions in Europe such as University College Galway (Ireland), Free University of Brussels (Belgium), University of Perugia (Italy), WMO and UNESCO. The necessary infrastructure has been put in place through the joint efforts of the Government of Kenya, WMO, International Institute for Infrastructural, Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering (IHE), Delft, The Netherlands. Other contributing organizations are the Institute of Hydrology Wallingford, Great Britain and EUMETSAT, Darmstadt, Germany.The regular and tailor -made courses have a direct relationship to problems and developments in the developing world. Teaching is conducted in the English language by lecturers with considerable experience. Weather in NairobiTemperatures in Nairobi are relatively comfortable ranging between 18 and 26 degrees celcius. However, cold spells are experienced during the months of June to August.
